A powerful magnitude 6.4 major quake (mag 6 or higher) rocked the West Coast of the US, approximately 200 miles North of San Francisco this lunchtime knocking out electricity to more than 50,000 people in Humboldt County. No tsunami warning has been issued. The shallow quake has been accompanied by more than 25 small to medium aftershocks, according to the USGS website.
As we move toward the end of 2022 today's major quake (mag 6 or higher) is the 4th of December and the 127th of 2022 which is slightly less than the average number of major quakes per year this century with just 11 days left of this year. At the same time, last year 154 major quakes had been reported by USGS worldwide.

The last 24 hours have seen another uptick in major quakes (mag 6 or higher) around the globe in an extremely lively month of seismic activity. This morning a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck northern Turkey near the town of Duzce, about 210km (130 miles) east of Turkey's largest city Istanbul. No reports of significant damage have been released.
Earlier a mag 6.2 was reported to have rocked the coast of Baja, California in Mexico. No tsunami in the area was reported.
The busiest sequence of major quake activity this year is impacting the Fiji area, South Pacific this week. On 9 November, three major quakes, (mag 6 or higher) struck South Fiji, a 665 km deep magnitude 7.0 was sandwiched between a magnitude 6.8 and a magnitude 6.6 both at a similar depth to the mag 7.0. Late yesterday evening a magnitude 7.3 struck east of Tonga and this morning a magnitude 7.0 rocked the Fiji region.
So far 118 major quakes have been recorded this year, which is slightly below par with a month and a half left of 2022. At this time last year, 132 major quakes, mag 6 or higher had been recorded. In 2020, 104—2019, 122—2018, 110—2017, 90—1016, 117, according to USGS data.
The biggest major quake of November (mag 6 or higher) struck the South Fiji Basin this morning. The 665 km deep magnitude 7.0 was sandwiched between a magnitude 6.8 and a magnitude 6.6 both at a similar depth to the mag 7.0.
The three major quakes, (mag 6 or higher) brings November's total to 6 major quakes, so far.

The magnitude 7.6 earthquake which rattled the Mexican capital on Monday was an extremely, unlikely coincidence. Three powerful and devastating earthquakes have now struck Mexico on Sept. 19 — in 1985, 2017 and now 2022.
Coincidently, the last two quakes also came shortly after the annual earthquake drill conducted every Sept. 19 to commemorate the devastating 1985 temblor. This time luckily only two deaths have been reported with a few hundred injuries. More than 200 buildings were damaged, including dozens of schools and health centres. Most of the damage was in those Pacific states, close to the Michoacan epicentre. On the morning of Sept. 19, 1985, a massive 8.0 magnitude earthquake devastated the centre, south and west of the country, leaving some 9,500 dead.
On Sept. 19, 2017, another massive quake hit Mexico, a mag 7.1, which happened just 11 days after a massive mag 8.2 struck the west coast which was the biggest Mexican earthquake in 100 years.

This major quake and—Maybe, some more later may well have been expected tonight, as the earth's magnetosphere is expecting strong G3-class geomagnetic storms during the night when a fairly powerful CME is expected to strike. The quake, registered as a mag 6.7, but upgraded to a M6.9 by USGS, southeast of the Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific is the 40th major quake (mag 6 or higher) of 2022 and the 12th of this month so far.
A powerful earthquake has been recorded in north-east Japan and is reported to have cut power to two million homes and has struck just 40 miles east of Fukushima. The tremor was recorded at magnitude 7.3 and in some areas is said to have reached 6-plus on Japan's shaking intensity scale, making it too forceful for people to stand, according to the BBC—The massive quake also followed a mag 6.4 fore shock. People living in the Fukushima, Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures have been told to expect aftershocks. The quake took place at 23:36 (14:36 GMT), the US Geological Survey said. An advisory for tsunami waves of one metre (3.3ft) has also been issued for parts of the north-east coast. The massive quake comes exactly 11 years and 5 days since the Great earthquake of Honshu killed an estimated 25,000 people died.
It is perhaps the perfect day to reflect just how f#cked up our planet has declined finds itself in once again just as President Putin orders his troops into the Ukraine. He is the latest megalomaniac in a long list of narcissistic maggots who believe it is their destiny to have people killed in the glory of his name! With 600 plus magnitude 5 or higher earthquakes, and more than 20 of them being mag 6 or greater in the last 12 months it must come as no great surprise the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Haʻapai volcano happened in the volatile region of the Tonga Trench on Saturday. The big question now is what impact will the eruption have to the Tonga region and our planet?
The population of Tonga is around 110,000 but understandably contact with the island is at the moment very difficult. The blast size is also not known yet but some experts are comparing it to something in the region of 1,000 times the size of the Hiroshima nuclear explosion in Japan during the war.
The fledgling new year has already surprised many scientists and experts as 2022 begins its first baby steps into the unknown.
Record number of major quakes starts off the new year!
It is very early days indeed but halfway through January 2022 and our planet is throwing quite a few surprises our way! On the 11th of January, two powerful major quakes, a mag 6.8 and a mag 6.6 rocked Alaska's Aleutian Islands. The two major quakes,(mag 6 or higher) in Alaska brought the total to 11 in the first 11 days of 2022 which is quite a start to the year, well—it's a record, going back further than 1900. As far as I can see from the USGS data base 11 major quakes in first 11 days of a year has never happened before. And, it hasn't stopped, this morning a magnitude 6.6 rocked the Sunda Straight in Indonesia bringing the total to 12 major quakes, (mag 6 or higher) in the first 14 days of January, 2022.
