Happy New Year Everyone!
2024 was a very special year for our Sun when it recorded a record number of X-Class Flares—a massive count of 55, which was an incredible 20 more than the previous record in 2002. We are now deep into Solar Maximum, the busiest peak in Solar Cycle 25 with our planet expected to be bombarded with CMEs this year. We are off to an ominous start, to say the least!
It would appear 2025 is carrying on where 2024 left off. Today NOAA's Space Prediction Centre issued a G4 SEVERE Geomatic Storm Event.
According to Spaceweather.com The G4 (Severe) Geomagnetic Storm Alert threshold was reached on January 1st, 2025 at 1241 ET due to continued effects from the CMEs that left the Sun on December 29th.
SEVERE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: 2025 is off to a good start for aurora chasers. Moderate (G2) to severe (G4) geomagnetic storms are underway on Jan. 1st with auroras appearing as far south as Mexico, Colorado and Arizona. The cause of the storm is a New Year's Eve CME impact.
