A powerful, very shallow, (6km deep) magnitude, 6.9 has rocked the Easter Island area of Chile. No tsunami warning, advisory, watch, or threat was issued. USGS has issued a Green alert for shaking-related fatalities and economic losses. There is a low likelihood of casualties and damage. The USGS has since reduced the quake to magnitude 6.6.
Sunday, 24 January 2021 A magnitude 7.0 quake, rocks the South Shetland Islands causing panic in Chile with a mistaken tsunami warning: 12th major quake of 2021 highest no since 2009: 45 volcanoes active, 40 along The Pacific Ring Of Fire!
Last nights quake is the first major quake, (mag 6 or higher) of February and the 13th of 2021 which is slightly above average compared to recent years.
