The 5th major quake of this month is a magnitude 6.5 - 167km SSW of Ndoi Island, Fiji according to USGS. Yesterday's quake was the 120th major quake of 2019. The biggest quake of the year so far was the magnitude 8.0 - 78km SE of Lagunas, Peru back in May.
Is 2019 producing more major quakes than previous years?
At the same period last year, 2018, 110 major quakes had been reported. In 2017, only 88 major quakes were reported, the year total for 2017 was the lowest recorded this century. In 2016, 116 were recorded and 2015, 122.
