Two shallow major quakes shook the South Pacific last night, a magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck Micronesia, see map above and a mag 6.2 - hit 74km northeast of L'Esperance Rock, New Zealand, see map below.

USGS
Last nights quakes bring the total to 5 major quakes in a busy December and the year total to 106 which is easily the quietest year this century for major quakes.

We could be in for more major quakes in the coming couple of day's as a new coronal hole in the Sun's atmosphere turned towards Earth yesterday with the ejected solar wind expected to hit the Earth's magnetosphere sometime on Monday or Tuesday.
