A mag 6.1 - 49km NW of Fais, Micronesia is the third major quake to hit the islands in just over 24 along with the mag 6.2 striking north of New Zealand yesterday morning.
It comes after the Indonesian Mount Agung volcano erupted back to life with a new eruption and yesterday and Kanlaon volcano of the Philippines rumbled back to life this afternoon.
Today's quake bring the total to 7 major quakes in a busy December and the year total to 108 which is easily the quietest year this century for major quakes.
We could be in for more major quakes in the coming couple of day's as a new coronal hole in the Sun's atmosphere turned towards Earth yesterday with the ejected solar wind expected to hit the Earth's magnetosphere sometime on Monday or Tuesday, see below.
