The first two major quakes, (mag 6 or higher) of October has rocked Tonga and Kandrian, Papua New Guinea. A magnitude 6.7 quake, reduced to a mag 6.4 struck off Tonga in the Pacific Ocean on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. The quake, 40 miles (64.57 km) southeast of Neiafu, Tonga, was very shallow - only 6.2 miles (10 km) below the seabed - which would have amplified the shaking and may cause some local waves, although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said no Pacific tsunami was expected.
A mag 6.0 struck 99km West of Kandrian Papua New Guinea, no Tsunami warning has been issued.
September 2020 recorded 14 major quakes, (mag 6 or higher) and so far this year the two quakes this morning have brought the total to 100 exactly. At the same period in 2019, 110 had been recorded. In 2018 at the same period 91 and 2017, only 75.
