- Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan is now leaking radiation at record levels.
- radiation levels could be many time higher than the 530 Sieverts per hour already recorded in other parts of the site
- 300 tons of radioactive water leaking into the Pacific every day
- TEPCO announced it expected to take at least $300 billion and four decades to fix
- Small amounts of radiation are now being detected of the coast of Oregon and California
And experts
believe melted fuel is leaking inside the plant almost daily causing radiation
levels high enough to kill people and knock out robots with just brief exposure.
Experts said the
radiation levels - as high as 530 Sieverts per hour - are now the highest
they've been since 2011 when a tsunami hit the coastal reactor.
"To put
this in very simple terms, four Sieverts can kill a handful of people," he
explained.
The latest
readings are now posing a serious challenge as officials prepare to dismantle
the facility.
There is
much speculation that radiation levels could be many time higher than the 530 Sieverts
per hour already recorded in other parts of the site where robots have yet to
reach.
These are
unimaginable radiation levels; a robot was sent in and lasted less than hour before
radiation took it out, it found a 6ft gaping hole which will somehow have to be
patched.
Small
amounts of radiation are now being detected of the coast of Oregon and
California. The problem is with 300 tons
of radioactive water leaking into the Pacific every day, what is that doing to
the Pacific Ocean?"
TEPCO
announced it expected to take at least $300 billion and four decades to fix the
problem; can we dare imagine what state the Pacific Ocean will be in 40 years
if radiation is washing up on the West Coast of America now, less than 6 years
after the disaster?

This reading is inside the shielded volume. Much lower outside. Lack of accurate information leads to ignorance. Please read more about radiation before posting things like this. People fear what they do not understand.

DeleteMuch lower outside of course but could be many times higher than 530 Sieverts per hour in other parts inside, don't you think people have a right to know this Shaun?

DeleteMore accurate info from people who actually work with it for a living and know what they are talking about.
Is anything I reported not true Shaun?
DeleteNo, but context is important. The only reason this is news is the numbers. The only reason these numbers were calculated (not detected) was they managed to get a robot closer then ever before. Please read the linked article and get some more info. Lack of context leads to people making the wrong assumption. There is info on Fukushima in the XKCD infographic linked earlier.
DeleteAlso the radiation levels detected on the west coast are at levels less then a single banana.
Context.
levels detected on the west coast are at levels less then a single banana is also correct but not in 40 years it won't, you should try telling the truth yourself Shaun
DeleteBetter not be buying/eating any more Pacific ocean fish. I'm thinking the Atlantic fishing industry is going to explode because of this.
Deletepeople have a right to know the truth, too many things are covered up these days, what gives people the right to do this. thankyou gary walton
ReplyDeleteTrue, however context is important. Facts and truth can be manipulated by perception. Always check more sources.
DeleteThank you beverley penny! Fukushima is causing "MAYHEM" to the Pacific!
DeleteNo, it is not. Research please. A simple google search yields more accurate info.
DeleteThere is a common saying about contamination in the industry: Dilution is the solution to pollution. Compared to the size of the Pacific and the amount being put into it, even after 40 years, is a drop in a barrel, not bucket. Also, the most common isotope of concern in the industry Co69 has a half life of just over 5 years. So most will be gone after a couple decades. Potassium is a more biological concern as it concentrates in the Thyroid. However, even it has a short half life.
ReplyDeleteTime removes all sources eventually. Look at Chernobyl. There is now a thriving ecosystem there. The only reason humans don't live there now is the conservative radiation limits. Look at the infographic.
Sorry, misspoke. Iodine is the isotope that concentrates in the Thyroid. But it also has a half life of 8 days or so. So by the time it reaches the west coast it has all decayed away. Potassium is the isotope in bananas.
Delete300 tons of radioactive water leaking into the Pacific every day, what is that doing to the Pacific Ocean, Thats almost 110,000 tons a year x 40 = 4 1/2 million tons of radioactive water, that is not a drop in a barrel by anyones standards Shaun.
DeleteCompared to the amount of water in the Pacific alone, not even counting the cross flow with the other seas and oceans? Your right, it is not a drop in the barrel. Its less then a drop in an Olympic size swimming pool.
DeleteAnd the industry isotope of concern is Co60, not 69. Typo.
DeleteThere is 660 million cubic km of water in the pacific alone. That is 2.33x10^13 cubic feet. A single cubic foot of seawater weights about 7.5lbs. So 300 tons of water is about 80,000 cubic feet. Doing the math leads to a number that shows what percentage of that water is from Fukushima after 40 years... Just over one tenth of one percent. .1203% to 4 significant digits.

And this is why context is important. The headline image is of waveheight following the tsunami and not radiation levels. A simple google search for NOAA pacific fukushima turned up the truth.

So we are not to worry then Shaun? And everything above is exaggerated, if that is what your saying, people will question your sanity Shaun!
ReplyDeleteI willingly get irradiated for a living. People already question my sanity. But yes, this is exaggerated. Radiation is easy to exaggerate. This is because people do not understand it and overreact. All my research into the matter shows that while bad, it is not as bad as it has been made out to be and as long as proper precautions are taken (and they are), then there is really nothing to worry about. A rational look at the info shows this.
DeleteAccording to Tokyo University,3 gigabecquerels(3 billion becquerels) of cesium-137 are flowing into the Port at fukushima daiici every single day. That is 10000 becquerels in each liter of ground water. It's way way worse then being reported...How many becquerels of cesium 137 can fit in a banana??
DeleteWell thanks for your input, interesting...
ReplyDeleteStop with the banana bull
ReplyDeleteIt remains "a hellva way to boil water". Just shut them all down, please, all of them. We need take none of this conversation whatsoever, if we weren't playing with things we really shouldn't be.
ReplyDeletePeople will think and say anything to continue to live their lives without making changes. Sadly. Gary Walton - thank you for the article. Shaun Williams - go back to sleep - sorry to have disturbed you.
ReplyDelete"the solution to pollution is dilution" is a sickening and sad self-centered narcisstic psychopathic response - living under geo-engineered skies I have gotten sick twice this winter and I never get sick - so - the dilution is not working anymore - let's think of another analogy that might penetrate the numbed dumbed - it's the planned obsolescence theory - use great materials the product lasts for ever - use semi-crappy materials - the product lasts as long or just past it's warranty - it comes down to honesty - it comes down to Natural Law - Theft - testing the principle of dilution is the solution to pollution against Theft - you steel my trust in you by lying to me and yourself about "dilution is the solution to pollution" it's NOT - it's DECEIT - it's lying by omission - it violates natural law principle of theft - you are stealing from me - by telling me this - you are placating me with deceit to make disaster seem more palatable - LIAR!
