This earthquake has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami in the source region.
A deep magnitude 7.9 strikes Papua New Guinea causing possible tsunami followed by a Mag 6.3 in the same area just half an hour later.
The two
major quakes have occurred as another massive coronal hole is facing Earth as
the last one earlier this month brought 8 major quakes in as many days.
Earlier
this month a massive coronal hole opened facing the Earth resulting in 8 major
quakes in as many days including the massive mag 7.8 in the Solomon Islands
This
"coronal hole" is a region where the sun's magnetic field has opened
up, allowing solar wind to escape. A
stream of solar wind emerging from this coronal hole could reach Earth as early
as Dec. 19th and influence the near-space environment of our planet for several
days. G1-class geomagnetic storms and high-latitude auroras are possible when
the solar wind arrives.
A BIG CORONAL HOLE TURNS TOWARD EARTH: For the third month in a row, a large hole in the sun's atmosphere is turning toward Earth. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory photographed the yawning structure on Dec. 16th:
Todays quakes bring the total of major quakes in December to 10 and the total for the year to 138.
