It was minutes before 6:00am Friday morning when the Turrialba erupted, spewing out a cloud of ash and gas reaching a 1,000 metres (one kilometre) above the crater.
The Observatorio Vulcanologico y Sismologico Nacional (Ovsicori) - National Seismological and Volcanological Observatory, reported the eruption at 5:50am, winds blowing the gas and ash in a northwesterly direction towards the Central Valley, though most of the accumulation of expelled material will remain around the colossus.
The Turrialba has been presenting volcanic and seismic activity since early 2015, the most powerful eruption reaching a height of 3,500 metres (3.5 kilometres) on May 24 of this year.
